You’re not unphotogenic: how a pre-wed shoot can prove it.
Feedback from a fabulous pre-wed photoshoot with two wonderful humans got me thinking. Why do we convince ourselves we’re unphotogenic? What does it even mean? Is it even a thing? And how can I convince you there’s no such thing?
It’s easy to tell yourself you’re unphotogenic.
If you’ve been caught at a peculiar angle, if you’ve had to stand and grimace for ages whilst the rest of your group’s dawdled into position, or if you’ve been so aware of the camera your brain’s gone into overdrive with all the self-conscious what-do-I-do-with-my-hands-where-do-I-look-and-should-I-smile? questions, the chances are you’ll have had photos that accurately reflect your uncomfortable torture.
You’re not unphotogenic. You’re just feeling awkward.
Whilst I genuinely believe there’s no such thing as being unphotogenic, feeling awkward and self-conscious in front of the camera is most definitely ‘a thing’.
And if you’re feeling uncomfortable, tense and nervous – and you’ve already convinced yourself you’re unphotogenic, guess what? Your photos will be stiff and unnatural. You’ll probably hate them and then you’ll tell yourself (again) that you’re unphotogenic. And so the cycle continues.
And that’s the reason why I recommend pre-wed shoots.
This is why I rave about pre-wed photoshoots
Pre-wed shoots give you chance to get all the cringy, self-conscious awkwardness out of the way. They’re a chance to learn some tips and tricks on where to put your hands, where to look and how not to overthink the whole ‘photoshoot’ thing.
So that when the big day comes, you can relax and enjoy your day with the camera around, knowing full well that you’re not unphotogenic at all. You just needed an opportunity to see that the secret’s in spending time with each other and the people you love – and to forget the camera’s even there.
Here’s just a small selection of shots from some of my favourite low-key pre-wed shoots.
